We’re excited to announce our lead Series B investment in nEye Systems, an optical switch startup founded by UC Berkeley technologists. This pioneering startup is tackling a critical bottleneck in AI: data center networking. As AI models grow, traditional electrical switches can't keep up, leading to bandwidth shortages and excessive power use. nEye, founded by University of California, Berkeley’s Professor Ming Wu, Kyungmok Kwon, and Tae Joon Seok, has developed breakthrough technology to address both of these issues: wafer-scale Optical Circuit Switch (OCS) technology. Leveraging over 10 years of research from Professor Ming Wu’s lab at UC Berkeley, nEye’s technology is 100x smaller size, 1,000x lower power, 10,000x faster switching, and 10x lower cost compared to existing options. This breakthrough enables efficient, high-bandwidth networking, crucial for unlocking AI’s true potential. We're pleased to partner with Professor Wu and the nEye team, alongside investors from M12, Microsoft's Venture Fund, Micron Ventures, NVIDIA, and Socratic Partners. Welcome to the #CapitalGfamily, Arthur Waller and Pennylane!
When we first met Arthur Waller, we were captivated by his vision for building *the* financial operating system for small businesses and accountants in Europe. Between upcoming e-invoicing legislation and the acceleration of generative AI, we knew there was an opportunity for someone to set a new standard for the 32 million small businesses in Continental Europe – and we were convinced that it would be Pennylane. Over the last 5 years, Pennylane has earned the trust of 4,500 accounting firms & 350,000 businesses, assembled one of the best technical teams in Europe, and built a culture that is humble, pragmatic, and high velocity. Today Pennylane is the clear leader in accounting and financial back office software in France, making accountants 10x more efficient and giving businesses all their financial tools in one real-time interface for the first time. And this is just the beginning. Arthur, Felix, Tancrède, Edouard, Thierry, Alexandre and Quentin have so much in store for their customers. Will, Miriam, and all of us at CapitalG are honored to partner with the entire Pennylane team, Luciana at Sequoia, Alex at Meritech, David at Global Founders Capital, and Tom at DST.
