Reinventing Humanity: This morning I published to my substack a small part of a book project called "Join the Dance" "Join the Dance" is an invitation to explore and re-imagine the human spirit with new eyes and to join in its re-creation. My premise is that we are at an inflection point in human history. Our success with technology and power is leading us into a trap. We cannot compete and self-maximize our way our of this trap. As Wendell Berry has said, if we would transform the world with technology, we must first transform ourselves. Fortunately, the direction of this transformation has been part of our deepest convictions since the beginning. It is our fundamental collaborative nature. Cooperation got us into this mess and cooperation will have to get us out. "Join the Dance" is an attempt to articulate these transformations, explore the deep scientific and philosophical reasons for them, and to propose a path forward. ⚠️ 2024 Hung Up, 2025 is Calling ⚠️ As we step into 2025, I’ve been reflecting on what has been a truly transformative year for Closer and for me personally. This time last year, we had just emerged from two years of silent work, driven by a vision to bring people closer together. In 2024, we made that vision a reality: ✨ Launched Closer and gained traction in the market. 🚀 Became one of the fastest-growing Spanish apps in decades. 🤝 Built a dream team that turns ideas into impact every single day. But as any founder knows, success doesn’t come without challenges. This year brought its share of late nights, tough decisions, and moments of doubt. Yet, those moments taught us resilience, and every challenge overcame added to the foundation we’re building. Now, 2025 stands before us as a year of potential—a chance to take everything we’ve learned and push even further. It’s not about setting new milestones just because the calendar flipped; it’s about continuing the work we’ve already started and staying relentless in the pursuit of our goals. First post in this space. Feels right that it would be about a thought-piece in collaboration w Ford on what a feminist take on technology would be like. Esp glad to be able to share some of the truly badass work done by activists in the field. "What would it look like for tech design and development to start with feminist and social justice assumptions instead of the profit motive? Can we design technology with embodied privacy and meaningful consent as the default, rather than extractive data practices? Can we create decentralized social networking platforms that don’t monetize hate and misogyny? What if every new digital technology undergoes a GBV safety audit before coming to market?"

My boyband career was short-lived and ended seven years ago—or at least, that’s how I’d interpret this picture without any context. The reality is a little less rockstar-like. 🤘 Today marks the seven-year anniversary of the decision to close down our startup, Sentar. Why commemorate shutting down a venture, essentially marking a chapter of entrepreneurial failure? Because, in hindsight, that experience paved the way for where I am today. I doubt I’d be where I am today—as a program manager at Danish Tech Challenge - without having been part of Sentar’s founding team. That journey gave me the privilege to now work with passionate, smart, and driven founders every day, and that’s worth celebrating. 🥂 Sentar also taught me invaluable lessons. It shaped my perspective, equipped me with experience, and inspired deep reflections on why we didn’t make it. For almost two weeks, my wife and I immersed ourselves in the wonders of Switzerland, a journey that felt as much about discovery as it did reflection. The towering Alps, serene lakes, and the quiet charm of Swiss villages were like scenes pulled from a dream, each moment etching itself into our memories. While I shared glimpses of our adventure on social media, the fast-paced nature of travel left little room for deeper reflections. Now, as we prepare to return home, I find myself compelled to pause and capture the essence of this incredible experience. This summary serves as a chronological record of our activities, a roadmap of sorts, tracing our path through Switzerland's diverse landscapes and rich cultures. Time to put together the best set of materials to share with ResearchOps Community next Thursday! #InternationalResearchOps Over the past 16+ years, I've worked with various clients (with different needs, setups and so on) to help them understand their customers and markets on a global scale (47 countries and counting). I've collaborated with teams of various forms from every continent (though, admittedly, I still dream of a project with some penguins down in Antarctica! 🐧) My research experiences weren't always smooth sailing. I've faced my fair share of tough challenges and surprises along the way. One common myth I keep running into is that doing cross-cultural research is as easy as hiring a local team, adding a translator, and going through the motions. But in reality, there’s so much more to it. There are a lot more nuances in it which would affect the quality of your research output and outcome. The ups, downs and hard-earned lessons from these experiences have been invaluable. That's why I decided to write 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 📖 so I can share these learnings and insights with others. My goal is to help others sidestep the mistakes I made and to help them minimise the challenges they might face when planning and executing international research, so they can get deeper, more accurate insights about international markets and local audiences. 🧙‍♂️ I'll never forget the magic I felt on my first cross-cultural team. We were designing an agricultural innovation, of all things. Our small team represented 4 continents and multiple countries. When we got together, the ideas flew. Seriously, it was crazy. There's a special sort of brilliance that belongs exclusively to teams like these. And boy did we WORK. By the time I moved on, that team had traveled, coordinated, and communicated across 12 different time zones. Now I'm in the world of tech and #remotework. I've come across dozens more teams like the one I had the privilege of being part of years ago. In fact, I build teams just like this. Here's what I've learned about cross-cultural tech teams: 📕 Innovation thrives on diversity. When you source outside of your local #hiring pool, you might as well be adding an exponent after your team's bottom line. Imagine, for example, what an Armenian AI expert (😉) could dream up with your product manager whiz. 📘 Problem-solving gets supercharged. Different cultural perspectives often lead to novel solutions that a homogeneous team might miss. 📙 Resilience becomes second nature. Teams that navigate cultural differences are often better equipped to handle other business challenges. But here's the kicker: many companies are barely scratching the surface of this potential. They're still stuck in old hiring paradigms, missing out on global talent that could transform their business. I believe the next tech revolution won't come from a single hub – it'll emerge from the synergy of global minds working together. What's your experience with cross-cultural teams? I’m getting personal about my experience fundraising as a female founder in Sifted and I need your help. It took time to find the words, but here they are: I was assaulted by a potential investor who exploited his position, using promises and dangling introductions to lure me into being alone with him. So I did what I know how to do, I found reprieve in my community and I spoke to women. A lot of women. Every woman that I spoke to who had fundraised had a similar story. Every. Single. One. From being asked on dates, being sent inappropriate texts and/or photos, meeting outside of office hours, to physical assaults. I started to wonder: Could this be another barrier that limits women’s ability to fundraise? Is this contributing to the gender gap in securing VC capital? We can hear that "attention is the new currency," but how we spend it is constantly evolving. In today's hyper-digital age, where technology is ever-present, our relationship with art and how we engage with it is shifting, too. Claire Bishop, an art historian and author of Disordered Attention, challenges traditional notions of art consumption. She argues that expecting people to stand mesmerized by a single work of art for extended periods—without technological engagement—is increasingly unrealistic. Instead, Bishop sees our “hybrid spectatorship” (snapping photos, texting, sharing clips) as a modern return to premodern sociability. While technology can sometimes pull us away, it can also be a tool for connection. Moderation, not a binary of “present” or “distracted,” is key. Bishop also emphasizes the privilege inherent in "switching off," noting that for many with responsibilities (i.e. caregiving), constant availability is non-negotiable. So, what would it look like if the arts embraced more relaxed, accessible frameworks? Like the disability justice movement's "sensory-friendly" performances, could we reimagine gallery spaces and stages as places where everyone feels comfortable, seen, and welcome? As much as I love dressing up for a performance, I often wonder about those who feel they don’t belong in these spaces, or days when I'd love to see something but only want to where sweats. How might we create a balance—where participation feels as inclusive as it is enriching? Claire Bishop's perspective is a call to rethink audience engagement and expand how we define “being present.” What are your thoughts on hybrid spectatorship and making the arts more accessible? For years, I've held back from starting something new, experimenting with Radical ideas (Radical 🌍 World), and waiting for the right moment. We're finally getting ready to launch. Most efforts to change work come from a command-and-control mindset (Fiat Lens: https://lnkd.in/gf6tS_e6). We see work as roles created by owners and filled by employees, but work is natural—every animal works for food, shelter, and family. Society has turned work into a rigid hierarchy. Politicians, community leaders, and colleges emphasize jobs, not the beauty of work. Our current system sacrifices autonomy, meaning, and agency—key motivators for human effort that make work innately rewarding. To change work, we must shift our worldview: work is not a job. The employer/employee relationship is inherently imbalanced. Worker cooperatives strive to address this but often still view members as employees, leading to subservience to leadership. Organizing work as peer-to-peer teams rather than hierarchies allows co-management to emerge from people. Cooperatives have also struggled by not adopting many corporate technologies that are deemed damaging. We need to democratize and repurpose these technologies, enabling us to build new companies from the ground up. Redefining work at personal and community levels allows genuine collaboration. We believe in co-ownership and co-management, recognizing unique qualities, and learning to collaborate. This dynamic process requires time and intimacy, rarely found in modern work culture. Today one of the most meaningful and impactful things I have ever worked on was published. McKinsey’s report “From margins to mainstream: Asians and Pacific Islanders in Hollywood”, was published and as a core researcher on this report, I could not be more proud of the work we have done. I came to McKinsey to do two things: 1. Help entertainment and media companies solve their toughest problems 2. Learn to make the case for diversity in the media and entertainment industry For me, this work satisfies both ✊🏽 The report looks into the prevelant dissatisfaction API consumers have on Asian representation in Hollywood, even though API representation has taken some huge steps forward in recent years. It outlines some of the problems we uncovered and some steps that studios can take to improve satisfaction. This work came from the love, sweat, and tears of some of the most amazing and kind people I have ever worked with; and my experience working hand-in-hand with Ravali Thimmapuram to create the final storyline and arguments for this report is an experience that has marked my professional career. Climate Crisis from a Different Perspective 🌍 I'm deep into ancient Chinese philosophies and practices for many years now. While these philosophies may not directly address the climate crisis and sustainability as we understand them today, they do touch fundamental human behaviors that have heavily contributed to our current situation. I‘m afraid that relying on new technologies, regulations, and agreements each year may not be enough. Achieving a different future will demand the toughest action of all: changing ourselves. “That path begins when we ask ourselves what is it that we really need? The Buddha taught that the cause of the problem is greed and its solution is contentment. We like to think that we can save the Earth, but the Earth doesn’t need saving, it can take care of itself. We need to realise that the Earth is more than a resource for satisfying our desires. The scientists, engineers and technologists have done their job and we know what we need to do. We’re just not doing it.“
