𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 In the "Historical Revenue" section I pull together several years of history (if available) and stack them together by month. At the bottom I calculate "Total of All Years" which gives me a grand total by month over the last [6] years. 2. 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 I take the respective monthly totals and divide them by the grand total Revenue over that time period. This gives me my "Seasonality Curve, As Calculated," which serves as a reference point for the forecast (a weighted-average of the history). Then, right below that, I have "Seasonality Curve, for Model," which allows the user to make any changes to the expected seasonality curve for this year. (Default is just to leave the curve alone) 3. 𝗣&𝗟 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 Now that I have my curve, I simply punch in the expected Revenue and Gross Margin (the two light-yellow input cells), and extrapolate those figures for each month based on the seasonality curve. The Revenue and Margin forecasts come from the Management Team. My job as the FP&A Professional is challenge their assumptions: - Will our seasonality be different this year? - Why $2.7mm? - Why 20% Margin? 4. 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 The Revenue and COGS get linked back to my Three Statement Model. If I need to make changes, I come back to my seasonality tab, make the change, and trust that my Three Statement Model will update accordingly. (meaning my Working Capital will also change correctly) 5. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗺𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 Lastly, I will always have double-checks confirming: - My seasonality curve equals 100% - The Revenue and COGS in the Schedule match the Three Statement Model - The Gross Profit in the Schedule matches the Three Statement Model All of these double-checks will feed into a Control Panel I have as the first page in my model. 6. 𝗗𝘂𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 For a new product line I just type "Alt + e + m," create a copy of the tab, and rename for a new product line. I'll build as many small, simple schedules as I need to create a comprehensive model that is easy to follow. 4 investors meetings this week (offline), including one with Robert Huynh from Reforged Labs (YC W22) to learn from his startup experience. These are so great that I even forgot to take pictures 😄 Next time then. Cool insights: - Robert is in Vietnam long-term, his team got into YC and raised global funding. Direct meetings in the US happened, but most of the time he as the CEO is doing it entirely in Vietnam. Other founders please take notes for an inspiration 🙌 - Gaming has a fresh attention, even from our government. Probably we should have more game-related startups? - Relationship is key for growth and everything. Knowing the right people is certainly one of the best things you could do for yourself and the career. - Applying to YC is much recommended, it's not that you'll be famous if being admitted, but the process cares so much about founder's approach to building and it'll make you tailor more for a long run. (And yes being in YC can be seen as a golden ticket to early stage funding, huge credibility boost) - this is my own assumption. Great day LinkedIn, catching up again soon 👍

Preparing a Sales.Lab workshop for startups and was reminded of this… Most Sales Professionals have heard of the following acronyms: ABC = Always be closing. ABO = Always be opening. ABL = Always be leaving. BANT = Budget. Authority. Need. Timeline (popularise by IBM in the 1960's) Not many outside of B2B Sales would have heard of MEDDIC (Created by Jack Napoli and Dick Dunkel from Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) during the early 1990s) MEDDIC is a sales qualification methodology used in complex B2B sales processes. It stands for Metrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain, and Champion. Metrics: Understand the quantifiable impact of your solution on the customer's business. This involves knowing how your product can improve their key performance indicators (KPIs). Economic Buyer: Identify who has the financial authority to buy your product in the customer's organization. Understand their priorities and decision-making process. Decision Criteria: Learn what criteria the customer uses to make their purchasing decision. This can include product features, return on investment, vendor reputation, etc. Decision Process: Understand the customer’s process for purchasing, including steps, key milestones, and timeline. Identify Pain: Recognize the customer’s pain points that your product can address. This requires a deep understanding of their challenges and needs. Champion: Find and nurture a champion within the customer's organization. This is someone who believes in your product's value and can advocate for it internally. Propzy's story is out. Here's my key takeaway: Know your market damn well (or don’t touch it at all). Why? - The founder of Propzy was in finance and not real estate. - He started Propzy after struggling to find properties in Vietnam. - However, it seems that his lack of understanding of how Vietnam’s real estate industry worked led to many bad decisions down the road. This is especially true for old industries like real estate. There’s a reason why agents or brokers are still heavily involved in the entire process (value chain) despite the rise of technology. It’s easy to attach technology and call it a tech startup to disrupt these old industries, but it’s extremely hard to gain wide adoption if you don’t fully understand how each element works. It's crazy to see how Propzy's collapse shocked the entire real estate market in Vietnam. Founders: Learn to say "tell me more." When faced with challenging questions or negative feedbacks in a meeting with an investor or a customer, or when in a tough negotiation, your instinct will be to respond and counter immediately because you don't want to look bad. Don't do that. Instead, say "tell me more." In most cases, such challenging questions or negative feedbacks are only a very small expressed part of the entire context. By saying "tell me more" you can extract more context behind them and better understand what that someone on the other side of the table really wants to know or concerns about, and it will help you regain the control over the conversation. Especially with investors, if you're a seed-stage company, most of the seed-stage VCs ask challenging questions just to see how you can clearly and logically think and respond as we understand that you may have to change your strategy, product, etc, going forward. In tough negotiations also, even when some things seem non-negotiable with the other side, there are alonost always second best and third best alternatives which you could find simply by saying "tell me more." Of course sometimes those tough questions, negative feedbacks or tough negotiations are the indicator of flat-out 'No’s.' But in such cases, just by simply asking them to tell you more, you’ve just - at the very least, learned a new perspective. So learn to say "tell me more."
