The Swansea Bay City Deal’s Digital Infrastructure Programme, with support from the Local Broadband Fund has successfully completed 50% of its Full Fibre Infrastructure Build project.   This significant milestone marks a major step forward in enhancing digital connectivity to public sector sites across the region, with substantial financial and social benefits for surrounding communities.   The #FullFibre build, delivered by BT Group via the Welsh Government funded Public Sector Broadband Aggregation (PSBA), aims to provide improved broadband provision to public sector sites across the region. The PSBA connects public sector organisations to a private, secure Wide Area Network, offering a fully managed service that enhances business-critical connectivity, and allows public sector organisations to benefit from innovative, cost-effective and resilient network services that drive productivity. Beneficiaries of the project include all four local authorities across the Swansea Bay City Deal - Bargen Ddinesig Bae Abertawe Region, Hywel Dda University Health Board and Swansea Bay University Health Board.   The aim of the project is to drive full fibre broadband to 69 publicly owned sites in need of improved infrastructure. This initiative provides fast, reliable, future-proofed connectivity to meet increasing digital demands and support the wider #DigitalTransformation agendas of the public sector. The project promises more efficient services and better user experiences for residents and businesses, cost savings for partners, and the potential for innovative digital applications such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences in key tourist locations like Pembrey Country Park and Margam Country Park.   Additionally, approximately 425 residential and business premises will benefit from improved broadband as a result, and the project is expected to stimulate further commercial investment, accelerating the rollout of full fibre networks across the region. This £2m joint investment, £1.05m of which has been secured by the Digital Infrastructure Programme from the Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government’s Local Broadband Fund will provide crucial infrastructure upgrades that will enhance the quality of life for residents and businesses, attract new investment, and stimulate economic growth. Sites completed in this phase include strategic locations that are vital to public service delivery. These sites have been prioritised to maximise the impact on the community and ensure the most efficient use of resources.

The North Norfolk Railway PLC has completed vital infrastructure improvements thanks to funding of £34,427 from the Rural England Prosperity Fund. Wessex Internet’s network build teams have officially started work to bring full fibre broadband to communities across Dorset and South Somerset, starting construction for the company’s £33.5 million government-funded Project Gigabit contract. This is the start of an extensive programme of build that will reach 21,400 homes and businesses, providing lightning-fast, gigabit-capable broadband to rural communities across South and West Dorset and South Somerset that would otherwise be left behind. "Fast, reliable digital connectivity is as important to our communities as any other public utility." An extension of a strategy to bring improved digital connectivity across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has been backed by our Transport and Infrastructure Committee. The proposed Connecting Cambridgeshire Digital Connectivity Strategy 2025-29 will support the Combined Authority’s ambition of outstanding digital connectivity across the region, supporting effective public service delivery, thriving communities and sustainable economic growth. The Connecting Cambridgeshire programme has already delivered ahead of national targets for superfast broadband (24 megabits per second) and Gigabit-capable broadband deployment. Gigabit-capable (typically full Fibre to the Premise (FTTP)) coverage of 85% across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough was achieved this year, ahead of the Government target of 2025. Chair of the Transport and Infrastructure Committee Cllr Anna Smith spoke about the importance of good digital connectivity: "It’s essential for people to access vital services, stay connected with family and friends, and take advantage of educational and job opportunities, especially with the growth in home and hybrid working and learning. Yet, we know that some areas still face gaps in coverage, and that has a huge impact on opportunities. Closing this digital divide is challenging, but crucial if we are to reduce inequalities." As the country embarks on one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects, there is growing recognition of how the HS2 development can double as a conduit for expanding fast broadband networks to underserved areas. Leveraging HS2 for Broadband Infrastructure As HS2 cuts through vast stretches of the UK, including many rural and semi-rural regions, the construction and planning of the railway can be synchronised with the deployment of fibre-optic broadband infrastructure. This approach, often referred to as “dig once,” involves laying fibre cables alongside railway tracks during the construction phase, reducing costs and minimising disruption. By integrating broadband infrastructure into the HS2 build, the government and telecoms providers can ensure that these rural areas receive much-needed access to high-speed internet. Planning and Building for Connectivity The planning phase of HS2 provides a critical window for incorporating broadband into the project. 🚆 We're proud to share that Consultant Paul Gill has recently completed his work on Network Rail's Access for All Programme, serving as Portfolio Manager for four stations.   🎯 #AccessForAll aims to improve accessibility at UK railway stations by providing an obstacle-free, level-access route between drop-off locations, station entrances, and platforms.
