About us
Girls Like Me Project believes that although African-American girls are disproportionately targeted by devaluing stereotypes and media messages of misogyny, self-hate, and destructive behavior that adversely normalizes circumstances of poverty and violence; a strong sense of self-efficacy and awareness can transform them into change agents for social good.

This has been a climatic close out of Black History Month amid the attacks and attempts at revisionism. So I consider it a high honor to have served as Black History Month guest speaker for Solorio High School. Title Presentation: Black History, Laws & Legacy: Breaking Stereotypes & Making Change Here are a few of Historicall Figures/Context I taught them about, whom we all Should Know: 1.) Tignon Laws related to today’s Crown Act 2.) Slave Codes related to stolen/silenced language & Ebonics- Dr. Geneva Smitherman 3.) David Ruggles- first Black-owned bookstore and safe harbor for Frederick Douglass and others escaping slavery. Emphasized Bookstores as safe harbors and literacy as resistance. 4.) Robert Smalls- seized a confederate ship to escape Slavery with his family and More than a dozen others; then going on to become among the first Blacks elected during Reconstruction where he served 5 terms as Congressman. Bonus* I shared how his story was buried for fear others would be inspired to revolt or resist - and for years the punishmentent for even speaking his name. 5.) Ida B. Wells; speaking Truth to power even under the threat off death. Standing up to systems and WINNING! How Black women fight for EVERYONE! Her work as a suffragist gave rights to indigenous and women of other ethnicities the right to vote ALONGSIDE white women who were only fighting for themselves 😉 6.) Vagabond Laws (prison industrial complex- modern day ICE Mandates) 7. African drums and music- suppression and censoring expression, and how Music has subversive messages for liberation. Key messages: 1. History is fluid and has no owner, for what is done to/for/from one impacts us all. History will always surface despite attempts to erase it. 2. Sankofa is the only way! 3. May the sacrifices and contributions of Black America be the guidepost and hope for resistance today! Special shout out to Nicole Williams McDonald and my bro Marquinn McDonald for choosing me. 🖤 ♥️ 💚 ✊🏿 #BlackHistoryMonth #publicspeaking #BlackMemoryWork #CulturalPreservation #SocialImpact

Every year, thousands of lives are impacted by the harsh realities of trafficking, and Black girls are disproportionately affected. Did you know that 43% of domestic minor sex trafficking victims in the U.S. are Black girls? These girls are often targeted due to systemic inequalities, poverty, and trauma histories, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation. We stand committed to equipping Black girls with the tools to thrive as empowered storytellers and advocates for justice. This month, we honor survivors by amplifying their voices and pushing for systemic changes that prevent trafficking and support recovery. #NationalHumanTraffickingPreventionMonth #GirlsLikeMeProjectpe

We are honored to be chosen to advance this deep and urgent work to heal our communities. Healing is the foundation for restoration, and we know the healing power of storytelling. Congratulations to all the Subgrantees. And immense gratitude to The Field Foundation of Illinois for leading the charge.
"Healing begins when we create the conditions for people to come together, develop trust, and create empathy across lines of difference. This work is essential for both our state and our country." – Daniel O. Ash, President, Field Foundation On this National Day of Racial Healing, we're proud to announce the relaunch of Healing Illinois, our partnership with the Illinois Department of Human Services. In 2025, this $4.5 million initiative will support 204 nonprofit organizations doing the essential work of building bridges and fostering understanding across our state. Healing Illinois funding will support these organizations in: - Community building and engagement to bring people together for meaningful dialogue - Media and storytelling to amplify a diversity of voices - Education and awareness to build pathways to understanding Visit healing.illinois.gov to learn more about these organizations and their vital work. #HealingIllinois #NDORH #Community #Powerbuilding

What a way to close out the year! Proud to complete the Capacity Building for Community Healers Graduation Milestone, an initiative of program Nonprofit Utopia . As part of its Fall 2024 Session, myself along with other nonprofit and faith-based leaders in North Lawndale, East Garfield Park, West Garfield Park, Austin, and Englewood who aspire to elevate our organizations. Participants included board members, executive directors, program managers, development managers, clergy, and career changers. The program equips leaders with the tools and knowledge to strengthen their organizations and expand their impact. Our Englewood cohort was facilitated and guided by the powerhouse Cecile De Mello . Our graduation featured an inspiring keynote address by IL Senator Lakesia Collins , who is the program sponsor and a dedicated advocate for community development. Congressman Danny K. Davis was present to encourage, spread knowledge and inspire wisdom. I’m extremely humbled and energized to lead with deeper capacity!
