One night, Beth (Fynbo) Benike went to bed as the CEO of a thriving family-owned business. The next morning, she woke up to $230,000 in tariffs. Beth and her family built Busy Baby LLC from the ground up, creating smart solutions to help parents keep their babies’ things off the floor. After appearing on Shark Tank, they’ve been on a roll: landing on shelves at Walmart and Target, and Beth being named Minnesota’s Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Now, new tariff policies are creating uncertainty for the future of her company. But even in the face of massive challenges, Beth is standing strong—for her kids, her employees, and the millions of small business owners navigating change.

I love my parents, but working for either of them sounds like my own personal nightmare. Apparently I'm in a shrinking minority. In my latest for The Wall Street Journal, I found that a combination of push and pull factors are leading to a surge in young people joining Mom & Dad Inc. At the same time that entry-level jobs are becoming harder to find in a cooling labor market, the Boomers and Gen Xers who own the vast majority of America's businesses are getting more serious about their succession planning as they look towards retirement. “For the first time in a generation, there’s more excitement and interest in taking over a business that already exists,” Citizens business banking head Mark Valentino told me. The data is unambiguous: The share of small businesses that employ a young adult child of an owner has doubled since 2018 and is up 13% year-over-year as of January, according to the analysis Nicholas Tremper at Gusto kindly crunched for me. Family business strategist Gary Plaster advises his clients to be cautious with their succession planning hopes before hiring progeny who might just be using the job as a placeholder while they wait for their dream role. “What’s happening seems like it’s better for the kids than it is for the business,” he said. But for brothers Curtis and Cliff Hovis of Hovis Auto & Truck Supply, helping their children build wealth is part of the point. “I want them not to struggle trying to achieve an American Dream that I believe is harder to get than ever,” said Curtis. “I no longer need to work. I could retire. I could sell. But my brother and I want to continue to grow the company so our children can take it over and do better than we did.” Check out the story (without a paywall) here: https://lnkd.in/gt9_TKfe If you're interested in potentially being a part of one of my economics stories, sign up here to get my sourcing queries: https://lnkd.in/gx7NRdsu

“Want to work for Dad’s auto parts company?” 5 years ago: no thanks Today: absolutely, where do I clock in In a new article in The Wall Street Journal, Rachel Wolfe spotlights a quiet shift: more Gen Zers are joining the family business - whether out of economic necessity, legacy building, or both. Our own Nich Tremper crunched the numbers at Gusto and found that the share of small businesses employing a child of the owner has doubled since 2018. And that trend shows no sign of slowing. Whether it’s short-term support or long-term succession, one thing’s clear: family-run businesses are evolving and the next generation is showing up.

We get it...the news about tariffs has been tough to keep up with. But if your business imports or exports anything, it’s worth paying attention. With a 10% universal tariff on the table (and even steeper rates from countries like China and Vietnam), cost pressures could hit fast. This quick breakdown covers: 📦 What a tariff actually is 💸 Who ends up footing the bill 📉 How it could hit your margins 🔧 And what you can actually do about it Swipe through 👉 then check the link in comments for the full guide. Note: Slide 4 was based on a previous version of the tariff policy, before a 90-day pause went into effect on April 10. All nations (except China) have a 10% tariff until we hear next in 90 days.
