6 Facts You (Maybe) Didn’t Know About Vaccines Vaccines are one of humanity’s greatest accomplishments – heroes of global health, the passion and pride of so many of us who work with rigor and ingenuity to move science forward. No other medical intervention comes close to rivaling their impact on human health and longevity, something we should all be thankful for. In recognition of World Immunization Week, I am sharing 6 numbers that remind us of their impact. ⏰ 6 people per minute - on average, that’s how many people across the globe have had their lives saved over the last 50 years as a result of vaccinations. That’s 154 million people who were given a chance to live, thanks to vaccines. 🦠 20+ life-threatening diseases have vaccines available to help prevent them. Thanks to vaccines, we’ve been able to eliminate or nearly eliminate diseases like smallpox and polio. 👶 4 million deaths are prevented worldwide each year from childhood vaccinations. With their developing immune systems, the germs that babies and children encounter can lead to serious disease – vaccines help protect our most vulnerable. 💉 14.5 million children across the world did not receive a single dose of a vaccine in 2023, despite their benefits. We must do more to ensure access to lifesaving vaccines, particularly for children. 👴 👵 65+ - at this age, people are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases like flu, COVID-19, pneumococcal pneumonia and RSV. Vaccines can help them prevent serious illness that could result in hospitalization or death. ❤️🩹 1.5 million additional lives could be saved globally each year, just by improving access to existing vaccines. #WorldImmunizationWeek isn’t just about celebrating the successes of vaccines – it’s about building on those successes and fighting to protect the hard-fought gains we’ve made against vaccine-preventable diseases. Thank you to everyone at Pfizer and the global health community focused on vaccine innovation in one way or another. You personally inspire me every day. Please take a moment to celebrate the impact of your work and leave a comment on what vaccines mean to you.
