This article presents the application of a mixed method research in software engineering, developing an innovative quality model for web components. The research applies the qualitative analysis of open surveys in order to determine a set of internal/static and external/dynamic metrics of an empirical quality model. Subsequently, Delphi Method quantitatively analyses, by consensus among the members of a panel of experts, the level of coverage that these metrics offer of the product quality and quality in use characteristics included in standard ISO/IEC 25000. Aiming a better understanding of the industry, the method applies to the software quality domain of web components developed in open repositories, where the fragmentation in the development processes has led to organic quality models of an implicit and collaborative nature. As a result of the research, a mixed methods methodology, exploratory sequential design, has been obtained that allows not only the assessment of web components hosted on public repositories, but also the systematisation of the coverage analysis among characteristics and metrics, essential for the development of software quality models in heterogeneous development environments.

With years of frantic development, when release fast and release often was the mandatory rule for web technologies and services, the open source paradigm and online distribution repositories have imposed de facto standards for quality assessment in fast‐paced innovation processes. Nowadays, however, in pursuit of productivity, security, and user satisfaction, the industry is beginning, through the introduction of new standards such as ECMAScript 6 or web components, to consider software engineering mandates for web technologies. This article reports a quality model aligned with international standard ISO/IEC 25010, covering web components technology, which ultimately aims to improve adoption by the software engineering industry, traditionally wary of agile Internet practices, the open source paradigm, and public repositories. Our research also presents an experimentation platform on which end users have validated the quality properties, highlighting the implicit connection with the perceived quality. The key result of our research convinces us that user ratings are suitable as a testing mechanism for product quality and quality‐in‐use metrics in order to define an absolute scale of comparison for web component quality.

Mining open source repositories introduces an effective approach to put in practice empirical software engineering in a variety of technologies. Kernel development (Linux) first and then Internet (Chromium) and more recently cloud orchestration (Kubernetes) and machine learning (TensorFlow) are fundamental pieces not just for open source ecosystem but also for the industry leading software innovation. Empirical software engineering sustains a better understanding of these projects, reducing even more the barriers for adoption. In this work we focus on empirical quality assessment developing software metrics artifacts to make web components quality measurable. After reviewing the state of the art and main frameworks for software measurement, we will present our proposal for the empirical evaluation of quality metrics for web components, data collection, measurement and prediction, discussing main benefits and some drawback of the selected approach, which will be aimed at future works.

Public repositories contain a variety of web components implementing GUI elements, system components for mashup development and wrappers of popular web services. The distribution of this technology through public repositories has fostered a growing
interest in quality metrics for web components, highlighting the absence of unified approach. This paper presents a reference model and evaluation framework for measuring the quality of web components. Preliminary results of an experimentation framework provide insights for comparing standard metrics with custom metrics based on curated user-perceived quality and data extracted
    from public repositories.

The open source perspective offers an interesting insight about cloud computing technologies: in one hand, cloud systems belong to the category of the Ultra-Large-Scale (ULS) systems, i.e. very complex systems where conventional approach for the technological development does not work. For such as systems, Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) licensing attracts innovation from the developers’ communities, reduces the risks of technology adoption and fosters the interoperability between systems and the creation of open standards. In the other hand, the current systems are far from achieving interoperability; even the FLOSS´s principles remain pending for many components in the architecture of the main cloud solutions, and for these reasons many FLOSS evangelists do not recommend using them. As a balance between the obvious drawbacks and benefits, recently a new strategy has appeared: Free/Open Services. However, it seems difficult to find short term solutions. This chapter illustrates both ideas, highlighting the pros and cons of these technologies, including a reference of main “open cloud” groups and open source technologies for the cloud. The rest of the book will include additional and deeper descriptions of some of the most interesting open cloud technologies.
