“I asked Suzanne Topalian, a surgeon and a new fellow in the lab, to develop techniques for growing human TIL (Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocyte)…After several months she developed a method that could grow T cells from 80% of human tumors. Then, with the help of industrial engineers from Du Pont and Fenway, she began the development of a partly automated system…I initially intended to give at least 100 billion TIL to each patient…’Getting that high was like breaking the sound barrier. There were 72 separate bags we had to harvest. It took 2 days.’ Then I raised our goal to treating each patient with 200 billion cells…plus high-dose IL-2 (Interleukin-2) and cyclophosphamide…(response rate) settled at 40%, double the response rate of LAK (Lymphokine-activated killer cells) and IL-2 or IL-2 alone…Yet we could not grow TIL from every patient. And even when we could, 60% of our patients failed to respond…Science usually advances in such small increments.”

Women are increasingly on boards of directors, though few are board chairs. Some great data in the 2024 U.S. Spencer Stuart Board Index of S&P 500 companies: 34% of all S&P 500 board directors are women, up from 19% in 2014 - Healthcare as an industry is slightly better with 36% of directors being women 18% of independent board chairs of S&P 500 companies are women - Healthcare is lagging here with only 6% of independent board chairs being women In 2024, 42% of new independent directors of S&P 500 companies were women, up from 30% in 2014 - Healthcare is ahead with 51% of new directors in 2024 being women #biotechceosisterhood #diversitymatters

We are seeing this play out in applications to the QB3 mentoring program. It is striking how many new companies are touting that their use of AI/ML provides a competitive advantage. It's almost more remarkable if a drug discovery company is NOT using AI. And it is very hard to judge the longer-term commercial prospects of a new company whose approach relies on AI/ML. Obviously the quality of the data the models are using is paramount. Systems will want the ability to understand costs and delegate as needed for the outcomes desired at the organizational level.   Enter Qualified.   We knew when we met Justin Norden, MD, MBA, MPhil and team we were standing in front of changemakers. These individuals have lived and breathed the true application and implementation of Generative AI far before we were asking ChatGPT to write our emails. During MIT Sloan’s Executive Electives week, I had the privilege of taking a course on Management Services led by Zeynep Ton, Professor of the Practice in Operations Management at MIT Sloan School of Management. 💡One key takeaway: fair wages and dignity are not at odds with profitability. Conventional wisdom suggests that higher pay leads to higher prices or lower profits. But Zeynep’s work demonstrates the opposite—designing jobs with respect and dignity attracts top talent, drives operational excellence, creates customer value, and fuels profitability and growth. Through her research at MIT Sloan and the Good Jobs Institute, Zeynep highlights that job design, not the employee, is the cause of organizational dysfunction. In the course, we explored case studies from companies like Mercadona, QuikTrip, and Sam’s Club, illustrating the shift from a vicious cycle of low investment, high turnover, and poor performance, to a virtuous cycle of employee investment, operational excellence, and profitability. The smartest companies invest in their people to reduce costs and boost profits. 🚀 This made me wonder: Can startups, unburdened by the complexities of large organizations, design jobs with dignity from the outset and avoid the toxic cycles that often plague bigger companies? ❤️ The mission of the MIT Sloan School of Management is to develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world and to generate ideas that advance management practice. 📚 Recommended reading: Ton, Zeynep, and Simon Harrow. Open-source models can be a strong lever for increasing gross margins at AI companies, especially those that have hefty cost structures (e.g., enterprise sales orgs that require significant customer success or implementation resources, as well forward-deployed AI services models common in healthcare and life sciences).
