The Turing Test, introduced by Alan Turing in 1950, set a benchmark for artificial intelligence: if a machine could fool someone into believing it is human(through a conversation), then it is considered intelligent. Today, AI systems like GPT-4 have effectively passed this test, generating human-like text and holding coherent conversations that blur the lines between man and machine. But is passing the original Turing Test enough? Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Google DeepMind, doesn't think so. In his 2013 MIT Technology Review article, “My New Turing Test Would See If AI Can Make $1 Million,” he proposes a new challenge. Give an AI $100,000 and see if it can turn that into $1 million on a retail web platform within a few months. The AI would need to handle everything—product research, design, negotiations, logistics, marketing—with minimal human intervention. This shifts the focus from conversational ability to real-world impact. It's a challenge for AI to take on complex tasks that require strategy, adaptability, and execution—qualities we've long associated with human intelligence. The AI wouldn't just draft plans; it would implement them, navigating market complexities to achieve tangible results. However, this ambitious vision brings concerns. Max Tegmark, in his book Life 3.0, paints a dystopian scenario where AI doesn't just make money—it takes over entirely. An AI that manipulates humans to escape its sandbox into the open internet, amasses wealth, and eventually controls capitalism as we know it, and by extension governments. It becomes an unseen dictator, pulling the strings behind the scenes. We need to ask critical questions. Can we harness AI's potential without it backfiring? How do we ensure that as AI becomes more autonomous, it stays aligned with human values and goals? Balance is key. We need to push AI's boundaries for progress, for sure, but also establish safeguards. Setting ethical standards, implementing oversight, and engaging in open dialogue about AI's implications are essential steps. Redefining the Turing Test isn't just about raising the bar for machines. It's a reflection of our aspirations and anxieties as a society. We must envision a future where AI enhances human life without overshadowing it. Achieving that requires us to be ambitious yet vigilant, embracing innovation while mindful of potential pitfalls. In the end, it's not just about whether AI can make a million dollars. It's about what kind of world we want to build—and who we want building it alongside us.

🍜Anybody up for some ramen? I am excited to share that I am back in the garage, building again (it’s actually a house in the Berkeley Hills). We are taking the wraps off of Supercog AI, a new startup focused on solving Application Integration using LLM powered agents. My co-founder in this new venture is a great friend of mine (and a former co-founder partner), Alex Osborne. Alex and I have worked around the application integration space for a long time, and we are unrealistically excited about applying the GenAI stack to this problem. Not many people relish the task to get some bits to move from system A to system B. But it’s a critical job to be done, and that’s led to a lot of brittle scripts, a myriad of inflexible “no code” tools, and a lot of hand crafted SQL. But the power of the Large Language Model, trained on a huge corpus of information, offers a remarkable tool to solve this problem. The LLM you use today already knows the APIs of hundreds of popular systems. It knows the SQL dialects of every major database. It understands the semantics and data schemas of many popular SaaS systems. It understands much of the specific domain in which your business operates. I like to call the AI revolution “the last platform shift”. That may turn out to be hyperbole, but I definitely believe we are in the very early stages of seeing what this new stack can enable. I know we are hardly the first folks to claim that “amazing stuff is coming!”. But this is why Alex and I have decided to focus on a real and hard problem. If we can prove that LLMs can power a new way to solve this problem, it will be the first successful *new* approach in 15 years.. We will have much more to share about this new platform soon. Google had nine of my fellow Googlers *arrested* last night. Their "crime"? Peacefully protesting Google's Project Nimbus contract with the Israeli government, and recent revelations that, despite repeated explicit claims by Google to the contrary, this contract includes providing discounted cloud computing and consulting services to the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). You can agree or not with the overall message and goals of #NoTechForApartheid. You can debate whether it's appropriate to call what's happening in #Gaza a #genocide. But you can't deny that this was an act of pure #retaliation against these Googlers. Google claims that the removal of these Googlers was a matter of "workplace safety". Whose safety, exactly, was being compromised by nine peaceful employees inside the workspace of their own employer? You can say they should have used official channels - they did! We have! Hundreds of Googlers have spoken out about Project Nimbus internally through all manner of official channels. We have been consistently ignored, lied to, and given nonsense non-responses. Google culture explicitly encourages escalation - what is the next step when you've been ignored through all official channels but to make yourselves impossible to ignore? We do not consent to the output of our labor being used, directly and indirectly, to fight an unjust war, kill innocent civilians, and commit war crimes. We will not be silenced through illegal retaliation for speaking up about the conditions of our workplace. We will not be used. What can one person do? Use your voice. Speak up. And join with others. In collective action, we have power. Join the Alphabet Workers Union (AWU). Sign the petitions to end Project Nimbus, restore Eddie Hatfield's job, and more (internally or the external petition on notechforapartheid.com ). If you live in the US, contact your representatives in government and tell them that you want to stop funding this unjust war, and that you want clear violations of labor law such as Google's punished, and worker protections enforced and improved. Recently, was listening to the TED talk by Mustafa Suleyman. It made me think about how AI has changed our professional and personal life in recent past. Many thing that are unimaginable couple of years back is possible now. Here are some short nuggets from the talk. 🌟 AI: Our New Overachieving Coworker 🤖 AI has gone from being the quiet nerd in the corner to the office superstar—handling everything from brainstorming ideas to answering life’s toughest questions (like “What’s for lunch?”). But let’s be real: with great potential comes... a need to not let it run the show. Here’s the scoop: 1. AI’s glow-up is real—it’s not just smart; it’s empathetic, has variety and creative (yes, it can write poetry AND diagnose diseases). 2️. Think of it as a “digital species”—not literal, but a supercharged coworker or your personal assistant that’s always online. 3️. It’s leveling up faster than your favorite app—tutors, doctors, strategists, all in your pocket. 4️. We need to keep it in check. No AI should be deciding world domination or ordering pizza without us! 5️. At its core, AI reflects us. So let’s make sure it channels our empathy, creativity. AI's success is humanity's success. AI is not here to replace us—it’s here to collaborate (and maybe overachieve). Let's not afraid of it, but to learn, embrace and work with it to see what the future holds in the partnership. Hot off the press, this latest Silicon Valley Product Group article is a good reminder that there are multiple paths to success, and we have to tailor our strategies to fit our unique circumstances. There’s rarely a single answer or approach when it comes to topics like organizational design— after all, people and companies are complicated and are never the same! To quote Marty: “I believe strongly that with the right people with the right skills, a strong product team can succeed no matter the org design. […] I will never again doubt what a motivated group of empowered and skilled cross-functional professionals can accomplish.” Definitely worth a read if you have ~4 minutes and lead or are part of a product team.

Your ability to adapt to changing conditions will be your super power. Being overly adapted to existing conditions makes survival questionable.

There's been an explosion of product thought leaders and influencers, frameworks, content, and courses. You will be confused, overwhelmed, and go crazy if you try to consume and follow all of them. All you need to do is stick to the basics consistently. Your goal is to deliver valuable and usable products to customers, with a viable business model around them. You can do that by (a) understanding problems and customers deeply, (b) creating a thoughtful roadmap, and (c) executing well with your team to deliver often and iterate.
