I don’t know what the future holds for Terraform. Also, I’ve used Terraform extensively and I liked it. Having said that, I’m a believer in coding to the cloud you’re in. CloudFormation is great, so is the CDK. It’s not often…nay, never…that I’m switching so much that have to go between AWS native tools then Azure. If I do switch, it’s a project by project basis and those are weeks or months long stretches in a single context. I guess I’m saying I’m a convert away from the single tool idea to just using each cloud’s native tool.

I'm absolutely appalled at the quotes in this article. I never thought they'd force my old AWS team back to the office, but they evidently are even though 90% were hired fully remote and some even virtual before the pandemic. It's funny Matt Garman talks about the organization not being able to live the leadership principals when remote, when Amazon's approach to RTO and his verbiage flys in the face of most of the LPs. I'm not sure Matt is "Right, A Lot" here with supposedly 9/10 people agreeing 5-day RTO is good. Surely opening up LinkedIn would have revealed the "diverse perspectives" to help him "disconfirm his beliefs" that the leadership principals require. Hell, put it on the Tech Survey. What happened to Frugality? Do the constraints of remote work not build resourcefulness? Certainly seems Amazon likes to be frugal with laptop specs, headsets, conferencing tools, and team meet-ups... Why not office buildings? Where is the skepticism when metrics and anecdotes differ? The supposed productivity/innovation metrics obviously differ from the overwhelmingly negative feedback from employees. Everyone should remember Jeff's quote: "The thing I have noticed is when the anecdotes and the data disagree, the anecdotes are usually right." Matt's quote "I have not seen an ability for us to [innovate] when we're not in-person" is particularly terrible because 1) It implies we didn't innovate at all during the pandemic, and 2) is proven wrong because Amazon extends/re-brands dozens of open source projects who, you guessed it, all have been made by teams of remotely collaborating volunteer developers. Do Amazon's SDEs really need to be back in the office to "really, really innovate" when large parts of Amazon's products are based on open source projects? Examples: Linux/Xen/KVM/MySQL/PostgreSQL/Redis/OpenSearch I'm not even sure why I'm posting this... Everyone at Amazon already understands that the highest levels of leadership are just advancing some private agenda with RTO, which is apparently more important than what the employees and the data says. I can't see how losing employees to RTO prioritizes long-term value, a hallmark of Day 1 thinking. And if leaders believe RTO is a "Day 1 move", why not share their data and mental model?
