I researched the determinants of EU grant allocation between 2008-2011 in Poland, with the primary focus being on political distortions. This is the first large-n study conducted on the allocation of Polish structural funds and is modeled using Heckman's correction (type II tobit model). By demonstrating the link between non-transparent systems and low social capital I was able to demonstrate that the literature's focus on organisational structure is not an adequate indicator of vulnerability to political distortions. The thesis further did not only highlight the presence of political influence, but also drew attention to other important statistically significant findings such as a negative relationship between unemployment and EU funding and a positive relationship between lobbying and EU funding.
