🚀 "𝗔 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻." Early in his product management career, Ken Norton learned a hard truth: what the team sees as a feature, the user might see as a bug. Ken’s Team at Google were excited about delivering new features for google doc — a revamped interface, advanced customization options, and more. But when they spoke to their users, their message was clear: "𝗙𝗶𝘅 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁." It was a wake-up call. As product managers, we often focus on innovation and differentiation, but none of it matters if the core experience doesn’t work. Users won’t notice the bells and whistles when their basic needs aren’t met. Here’s what I learned: 1️⃣ 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗰𝘁. Users don’t just want to be heard—they want their pain points solved. 2️⃣ 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀. Fix what’s broken before adding something new. 3️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗹𝘆. Not everything is equally important, even if it looks that way on paper. They first fixed the issues, and only then moved to the exciting stuff. The result? A better experience, happier users, and stronger growth. Google Docs has higher active monthly users compared to Microsoft Word now. 💡 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁; 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀. Really enjoyed my chat with Matt Hinds, CEO of Sauce, where we talked about transforming product vision into company strategy, partnering with CEOs, and protecting teams against planning busy work that gets thrown away in Q1. As we head into company planning season, here’s the tl;dr on how to get planning right: 📝 Define the strategy — Create a 1-pager (ok, maybe a 2-pager) that includes: the mission, what that means for customers in 3 years time, and investment areas for the next 12-18 months. 👥 Design the org — Spend a lot of time on org design so your teams reflect that strategy. 🎯 Clarify the investment areas — What’s even more important than what you’re investing in, is what you’re not investing in. Make sure your teams know what to focus on and what falls away. 🔨 Empower teams — Let the what’s and how’s come from the team. As a leader, it’s not up to you to dictate what we need to build. Insane! Using a tip from my AI PM class with Product Management Exercises | ProductManagement, I tried out the chatprd.ai tool to write up my PRD. I watched this generate in less than one minute what would have taken me 2 hours to type out. I "fed" it more criteria and watched it do it's magic. I always tell the kids - work smarter, not harder. Tools like this get my job done faster, so I can focus on the more critical thinking parts of the work vs "the paperwork". Would have been great to fill out those TPS reports back in the day! Any of my PM peeps have other cool AI PM tools to try? ProductMonkey.ai was great for user story ticket generation too.

According to the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN), 76% of global sites and apps employ at least one dark pattern, with 67% utilizing multiple deceptive strategies. I understand that, at a company level, the pressure to deliver quick results can sometimes lead to the unintentional introduction of dark patterns in product design. While these tactics might achieve short-term goals, they often make technology stressful and challenging for users. Our design team recently attended Figma's Config 2024 conference, and they returned energized and full of insights. The event was a fantastic opportunity to network with designers from around the world and deepen our knowledge of Figma, our most critical design tool. Figma AI:  The new AI capabilities in Figma are particularly intriguing. Features like generating UI mocks, images, prototypes, and contextual layer renaming promise to streamline our design process. We're excited to explore how these tools can be applied practically in our projects. Figma Slides:  Figma's bold move into the presentation space with Figma Slides is noteworthy. Challenging established tools like PowerPoint and Google Slides, Figma Slides offers advanced editing tools, AI writing assistance, and interactive features. It's been 2 months since Lenny Rachitsky's amazing product summit in San Francisco, and one talk continues to resonate deeply with my journey: Claire Vo "Product Management is Dead." 🤔 As someone who started as an engineer and switched to product management over a decade ago (partly due to frustration with PMs 😅), I've witnessed this evolution firsthand. While I'd occasionally peek at code for troubleshooting or write scripts for data analysis, my life was mostly code-free. Until recently. The past 6 months have been different. I find myself writing code for prototypes, creating text summarization tools, automating workflows to save time. And it's getting easier! Claire's insight was spot-on: The traditional product triad (Engineering, Design, Product) is converging. We're moving from siloed roles to what she calls "generalist specialists" - professionals who can work across disciplines, leveraging AI tools and platforms. As a people manager in the AI space, I've always valued technical understanding in PMs. Because in this domain, data literacy is crucial, experimentation knowledge is key and understanding architectural discussions and technical constraints is what will make you a trusted partner. But now? The game has changed. Tomorrow's successful PMs will be those who: 1. Deeply understand user needs (always fundamental) 2. Can quickly prototype their ideas 3. Partner effectively with engineers to scale solutions 4. Leverage AI tools to amplify their capabilities Yes, this transformation might seem scary But here's the truth: The future belongs to PMs who don't just ideate - they create. This hands-on approach helps engineers better visualize ideas,captures user needs more accurately and streamlines product development. The question isn't whether this change is coming - it's already here and it's a fundamental challenge for hiring managers to bring talent who can work across disciplines. The question for PMs is: Are you ready to evolve as a product manager? Something I've learned over the years: your impact as a PM grows most when you deeply understand what you can't control, not what you can. Many product managers naturally gravitate toward refining processes and perfecting frameworks—the tools directly within their control. While these help, the greatest leverage comes from understanding the things outside your control: the market dynamics, technology shifts, and industry forces that shape the playing field. The internal processes are the game plan, but the external forces dictate the rules of the game itself. Master the rules first, then optimize how you play. The best PMs I've worked with tend to spend a disproportionate amount of time focusing on these three areas. 🌎 The market. Dive deep into how your market dynamics actually works. Study your customers' businesses—their earnings calls, regulatory challenges, competitive landscape, and strategic initiatives. Know the latest trends shaping decisions. Understand the differences by segment. You'll spot opportunities others miss. 🔬 The domain. Learn your customers' craft. If you're building developer tools, study system architecture. Marketing software? Learn campaign analytics. Financial products? Understand accounting standards. You don't need to become an expert, but you should speak their language fluently. Innovation comes when you truly understand the challenges of their craft. 📊 The business. Know your company P&L. Understand GTM motions and where the gaps are. Build strong opinions by studying pricing strategies, go-to-market trends, corporate finance, and diving deep with your customer-facing teams. These fields help you think about product problems in a more tangible way, and you'll more naturally align with company strategy.

Keeping track of customer feedback can sometimes feel like a scavenger hunt across your tools. The solution? Centralize it all. We have a saying at Koa Health that Everything Product is Clinical and Everything Clinical is Product. While I can understand the sentiments here, and agree wholeheartedly that working in healthtech is different, I don’t feel posts like the one below are helpful. ✅ You of course should ALWAYS build an MVP - but minimally viable in healthcare requires ethics, safety, and compliance. ✅ Execute fast, Discover meaningfully. - things will and should be broken in our system, but the breaking requires close guidance and thoughtful approaches WITH clinicians. ‼️PLG is definitely more tricky in Healthtech but I don’t understand why this is even called out here. It’s irrelevant how growth should or should not happen as long as it’s ethical and in the best interest of health outcomes. 💡I can get on board with investing in the support of your users more than traditional tech - but again… I don’t see why this is a general statement about healthtech products. It’s based on the needs of your users. If tech can facilitate it effectively and safely, go for it. ✅ stages aren’t bad. Over promising and making unproven claims on stages is bad. Let’s focus on the root problem, not the forum.

🎯 AI and Your 2025 Product Strategy Another great session with The Prodify Guild (TPG), Prodify's monthly cross-client meetings to dive deep into topics shaping the product management world. We explored how product teams can approach AI —not as a feature, but as a way to solve customer problems. Here’s the 3-step process we discussed for assessing where AI fits into your 2025 strategy: 1️⃣ Revisit Your Vision AI should align with your product vision and enhance your customers’ experience. To do this, consider your customer journey and ask where AI can be game-changing: - Trigger: What frustrations drive your customers to seek a solution, and can AI remove friction in that moment? - Discovery: How can AI help customers find your product more effectively? For example, personalized recommendations based on behavior or search intent. - Evaluation: Can AI simplify how customers assess your product? Automated demos or personalized trial experiences are powerful tools. - Onboarding: Is your onboarding experience tailored? AI can use customer-provided data to deliver personalized, intuitive setups. - Engagement: AI can optimize engagement by identifying which features drive the most value for users. - Retention: Use AI to analyze churn signals and proactively address customer needs to boost loyalty. 2️⃣ Identify Revenue Focus Areas We focused this session specifically on the use case of AI's potential across retention and growth. A few examples: - Personalization at Scale: Deliver unique experiences dynamically, such as Stitch Fix using AI to generate tailored clothing recommendations. - Save Customers Time: Automate repetitive tasks to make your product more efficient, as Superhuman does by drafting emails for users overnight. - Drive Innovation and Expand Markets: Use AI to develop entirely new product offerings, like GoDaddy’s Airo that streamline small business branding and marketing. 3️⃣ The 3 Levels of AI Feature Maturity Understanding your company's readiness for AI can guide where you begin. These three levels represent increasing complexity (image attached): - Basic Integration: A great starting point for companies new to AI. This might involve embedding tools like ChatGPT to add immediate value with minimal setup. - Customized Application Layer: AI is integrated with your organization’s data to deliver more tailored solutions. e.g., Prodify helped a client use AI to combine internal data and existing workflows for smarter decision-making. - Advanced Model Augmentation: Companies at this level build proprietary AI models or layer custom capabilities on top of existing models, using AI insights across their product ecosystem.  It was a timely discussion, as many product teams are considering where AI fits in with 2025 strategic planning. We ended the session with an interactive exercise where attendees could brainstorm how AI could align with their product vision and strategy.
