Lakehouse Table Formats: Under the Hood Apache Hudi, #ApacheIceberg & Delta Lake are the 3 prominent table formats that enable an open lakehouse architecture. One of the most common question that I usually get from people is that how do these 3 formats differ fundamentally. Well, the first thing to know about these table formats is that they are not something new. Table formats have been around for a while, starting with OLTP db to OLAP data warehouses. The distinction is that vendor databases have had formats that are traditionally closed in nature, i.e. proprietary (developed for their compute & storage engine). At it's most basic form, these table formats are a "metadata layer" on top of data file formats such as #Parquet. When the data is written to a distributed file system, these 3 formats have similar structure. You can see this in the image below where the 'Data Layer' (containing the Parquet files) is common for all of the three. The only difference is "how" the metadata layer is designed for each of the formats. If you see in the image, a Hudi table is a directory with the ".hoodie" metadata. Similarly, Delta has a JSON log . And, Iceberg has the metadata file, manifest list & manifest file. To summarize, ✅ Table formats act as a metadata layer on top of the file formats like Parquet ✅ They provide a table-like abstraction over these file formats and with it a schema, commit history, partitions, and column stats. ✅ In a technical sense, they are a set of APIs for compute engines to interact with tables. But, this is not all. While table formats provide the basis for storing data openly, you still need a Storage Engine that provides features such as ACID transactions, indexing, clustering, concurrency control, etc. This ensures the transactional capabilities and guarantees necessary for workloads.
