I'm writing NServiceBus unit/integration tests using TestContainers. The tests run a new SQL Server instance and deploy database migrations using DbUp. They also run the Azurite queue emulator as my NServiceBus transport. All inside containers. These are not "full" integration tests, but they are quick, reliable, and help verify operations against my external dependencies like sending messages to a queue or inserting records into a database. I wrote a little Substack article describing more details.

.Net 9 - Cryptography #dotnet #dotnetcore #dotnet9 #microsoft #coding #csharp #cryptography .NET 9 introduces a range of improvements, to the .NET ecosystem with a strong focus on AI and building cloud-native distributed applications by boosting performance and enhancements to .NET libraries and frameworks. Some notable highlights are: New escape sequence You can use \e as a character literal escape sequence for the ESCAPE character, Unicode U+001B. Previously, you used \u001b or \x1b. LINQ Recently added to the toolkit are the CountBy and AggregateBy methods. These functions enable state aggregation by key, eliminating the necessity for intermediate groupings through GroupBy. While there are various enhancements made, the ones that particularly stand out for me are those related to the cryptographic hashing mechanism. Cryptography - Hashing with CryptographicOperations.HashData Imagine you need to calculate a hash for some data. Traditionally, .NET offered handy “one-shot” methods like SHA256.HashData and HMACSHA256.HashData. These are great because they're fast and avoid unnecessary memory usage. But what if you want an API where the person using your code decides which hashing algorithm to use? Previously, you’d have to write code to handle each possible HashAlgorithmName – not ideal. .NET 9 solves this with CryptographicOperations.HashData. This method lets you: Hash data in one go: No more juggling multiple methods based on the algorithm. Pick your algorithm: Simply pass the desired HashAlgorithmName as an argument. This keeps your code clean and potentially improves performance by eliminating extra checks and calls. The following code snip lets you calculate and display the hash of a piece of data. It defines functions to handle the hashing process: HashAndProcessData: Takes the desired hashing algorithm and data as inputs. It uses the .NET CryptographicOperations class to calculate the hash and then calls ProcessHash to handle it. ProcessHash: Converts the raw hash data into a human-readable string using Base64 encoding and prints it to the console, along with the hashing algorithm used.
