- Sometimes, we come across a data set or outcome that seems a bit odd. For example, in a city made up of 51% women, where jury pools are said to be chosen at random, a certain jury pool of 50 people contains only eight women. Or here's another one. A national coffee chain creates a contest where customers can win prizes. A customer gets one game piece with every beverage they purchase. Millions of people play the game. There are 10 prizes worth over $100,00. And two of those big prizes are won by relatives of coffee chain employees. Or this more ominous example. A chemical factory has 500 employees. In only a two year period, 2 of the 500 employees are diagnosed with brain cancer. Each of those scenarios makes us pause. We might say to ourselves, "That doesn't seem right."
