From the course: Twilio Essentials Unit 3: All Together Now

Introducing the project

(bright music) - Hey there, I'm Craig and I'm a developer. This course happens to be in a series, so if you've stumbled upon this course out of order, I'm going to assume some knowledge from the previous courses. If you're all caught up, welcome back. Well ahoy there, Twilio developer, are you ready to apply some of those skills that you've been picking up along your journey? I love this part, the building part. Now, I don't know about you, but when I'm learning something new, I try to learn by building a well known existing application using it. This is common in the front-end web development world where they build a to-do list application in the bazillion front-end frameworks that exist. It really lets you understand the intricacies of the specific bits of the framework. So I always think of something along those lines, but some sort of application that uses notifications and a microphone and a speaker, and I came up with one, and honestly, I kind of love it. Depending on when you're watching this video, chances are a new version of this type of app just popped up. I'm talking about these audio-only apps that are making their way into just about every application, they allow people to chat and others to observe. I think they're great, I love people chatting and sharing ideas, and I love the idea of allowing people to be part of the live experience, it's like a performance that will only happen once. I have such FOMO about this sort of thing, and it kills me that I keep missing them, and I plan to attend and then I forget. That's why the product that we're going to build is going to face FOMO head on. We're not going to let you miss these incredible conversations, and we're going to build this without a UI whatsoever, all over the PSTN. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you PhoneMO. We're going to build an audio-only conversation app that allows you to register over text messaging and listen on actual phone calls. You'll sign up to attend the talk via text message, and you'll be called when the talk begins, you'll never miss out. I've been working on a couple of slogans, let me know what you think. So here we go, slogan number one, FOMO, NO MO. (upbeat music) Or slogan number two, PhoneMO, don't call us kid, we'll call you. (crickets chirping) We'll work out the marketing. We're going to build this entire application using the Serverless Toolkit. All the code will be hosted on Twilio, and I realized, if you're still in trial mode, this is probably going to be a little bit difficult to test out. So I'm going to upgrade my account, and I've put a special upgrade code for you in the notes, so you can have the same experience as I do. I can't wait to build this with you, let's get started.
