Anna Kjellberg’s Post

Walking in my own footsteps Lars’ story is part of the “Walking in my own footsteps” taking place in 2024 as a celebration to the leaders who have inspired me during my 40-year professional career. The CEO of QlikTech Lars Björk, was my manager for 6 years during a time when the company was growing fast. We built an organization with everything required for global presence and going public. Many times fixing the engine while flying. Possible as we had a strong company culture with people collaborating across boarders and functions. Lars is one of few to have been a successful leader during an entrepreneurial era, up-scaling as well as after going public. He joined QlikTech in 2000 as the CFO. The company survived a close Chapter11 in the early days, re-positioned the software product (QlikView), managed a turn around, and brought in international venture capital money in 2004 to start scaling up the organization to build, what would later become a true global software player and prepare for an exit through an IPO on Nasdaq New York, which happened in 2010. QlikView helped business managers see and analyze their data in a new way to make more qualified decisions. We had skilled sales force and aligned leaders to bring QlikView to the market. We adapted ways of working, and gradually brought in new competence as we expanded. Qlik had so much soul that Morgan Stanley could measure the company culture in an increased opening stock value. So what is the story behind? Lars Björk took his family and moved to the US in 2006 to be closer to what would be the main market for the company and prepare for an exit, potentially an IPO. The hub for R&D and the internal induction week, QlikAcademy, remained in Lund, Sweden where QlikTech was founded. A way to cement a US headquarted company with a Swedish soul. QlikAcademy was mandatory for all employees, from receptionists to VPs. It offered a common framework for values, product and sales, with interactive workshops and real life business cases. This is where the Qlik Soul began to prosper beyond Lund as classes stayed in touch to share knowledge. And in addition to QlikAcademy and partner summits, the CEO invited to an annual all employee gathering. The magic was in this combination of face to face meetings, and enabling collaboration through a global virtual network, using Skype in the early days. At the annual event we celebrated wins, educated ourselves and had fun. It glued the company, the people and the culture together. We lived our values and could move forward as one team, with top leaders who walked the talk. Looking back somewhat wiser, we both agree some things could have been done differently, but all in all we know that the Qlik journey was a once in a lifetime experience hard to copy. It was great to catch up in Lund to share war stories. I feel privileged to have been part of the Qlik spirit and taking the company to Nasdaq.  Here is Lars’ story. Enjoy the read.

Anna Kjellberg this put a huge smile on my face this morning to see you with Lars Björk. I will be forever blessed that I was a part of the magical culture of Qlik in the early days as one of the first 25 employees in the US, through IPO and part of the company for almost 7 years. I know I will never have that experience again but I know that so many companies could learn from how we lived and breathed the culture. I think my blood is still green. Grateful to you both.

Thank you for sharing Anna. Great post that truly touched my heart. I take a statement of your post: that Qlik journey was a once in a lifetime experience hard to copy. Actually, many of us have been in different companies before and after Qlik and I can say that I am still missing those fantastic times. You did an amazing job to align all we did around Qlik Values. A big hug to both of you Anna and Lars. And to all the Qlikies

Look at you two! What an amazing picture, it makes me smile. These are incredible memories that many of us will hold onto forever and it truly feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I still often tell how integral culture was to Qlik's success and how wonderful it was to be part of it.

I feel very fortunate to have been there and part of the Qlik journey during that period, Anna Kjellberg . I still remember meeting you in person during onboarding in Lund in my very first week of work. Very fond memories and special times indeed!
