Ever wondered what would happen if insurance policies were translated by AI alone? Well, wonder no more! I asked ChatGPT to translate basic insurance terms into Irish, and I'm not shocked at the results. (The correct terms are in brackets): Ex-gratia payment - Íocaíocht deonach* (Íocaíocht ex-gratia) * A grammatical error is also present, never mind the incorrect term being used. A 'h' should be added after the 'd' in the adjective 'deonach' because 'íocaíocht' is a feminine noun. Loss adjuster - eagraí* caillteanais (coigeartóir caillteanais) * Eagraí means organiser, arranger or choreographer Average clause - *conradh meán* (clásal caillroinnte) * This is nonsensical. Back translation = average contract. Basic premium - *príomh-mhuirear* (bunphréimh árachais) * In the context of finance, 'muirear' is a cost or fee. The suffix 'príomh-' in this case would indicate a primary, main or core cost or fee. Once again, nonsensical. Aviation insurance: árachas aerárthaíochta* (árachas eitlíochta) *aerárthach means aircraft rather than aviation. But never mind that, 'aerárthaíocht' isn't even a word. Now you've seen how accurate ChatGPT is with these terms, imagine you left it to translate an entire document. While the thought of this might be amusing, the reality is that automated translations can lead to serious errors in crucial documents like insurance policies. These mistakes can cause confusion and potential financial losses for both clients and insurers. While AI can assist, nothing beats the precision and expertise of a human translator specialising in insurance. Don’t let translation errors cost you! For a firm that focuses on litigating insurance claims for automobile accidents on behalf of a large insurance company, fixed fee arrangements can become even more predictable. A firm that knows its cost structure can more effectively bid on 100 cases knowing that on average, they can be competitive and be profitable.
