Most startup management advice tells you how to control chaos. Here's the truth: You can't control it. And trying to will often burn you out. I burned out when Facebook was going to hypergrowth. Mark offered me amazing roles, but I was too exhausted to even consider them. The only way to recover was to leave. I'm teaching a free, 30-minute Lightning Lesson on Maven on March 4 about what I wish I knew when I first became a manager inside a fast growing company. Hint: This isn't about working harder. It's about staying sane while building something great. We’ll get into: - What to do when your team is operating at 50% capacity - When to fire people (yes, really - it's good for everyone) - How to grow and retain your highest performers Just honest talk about surviving the marathon of startup leadership. Join me at 10am PT on March 4! Link in comments (You can also sign up and they'll send you the recording even if you can't make the time)

I agree, you can't control the chaos. Better to embrace it and keep growing the business (growth usually cures all), Molly Graham. My friend, Dee Murthy, is the cofounder of a Series C rocketship and he said: Chaos experience is priceless. If you’ve only worked at big companies, startup founders think you’re unwilling to get your hands dirty. What counts as chaos? 1/ Failed startup. 2/ Hyper-growth (e.g. Uber 8 years ago, not 2). 3/ Big company operator on a small under-resourced team that built something special.

So, great said, Molly. We can't control the chaos, we can only see what is under our control, and focus on that.

I have a conflict and can't make the live session, but I am looking forward to getting the recording afterwards.

So true! This looks amazing.

Managing through chaos isn’t about control—it’s about adaptation. Wish I had learned that earlier in my career! This lesson sounds like a must for startup leaders.
