Sunday Musings - The X Factor Edition
One of the most telling things I've seen recently about how much work we still have to do with regards to understanding and integrating the experience of emotions, was an XFactor audition clip, of all things.
A young man named Josh sang a song, the lyrics of which reminded him of his dead friend.
The judging panel were clearly moved by the performance. Simon Cowell was uncharacteristically quiet in the feedback portion of the audition, and was clearly seen dabbing his eyes.
Sheryl Cole, meanwhile, apologised for her tears.
This speaks volumes.
As judges in a talent competition, these experts sit on a panel to identify artists who have the greatest potential to move their audience.
As an audience, we enter into a relationship with an artist and their material - be it music, drama, movies, dance, visual arts etc. We enter into this relationship primarily with the objective of being moved - of experiencing altering thoughts and emotions within the context of the work the artist presents.
It follows that the highest compliment to this singers performance would have been to move the judges through the emotions that he was embodying in his performance.
So, why the apology?
Let's think about what this means for our emotional wellbeing for a moment.
I've lost track of the number of people who've been 'out of their comfort zone' when we explore the nuts and bolts of emotion as part of the ecosystem that determines their effectiveness.
We can no longer talk about the brain, wellbeing, or effectiveness WITHOUT talking about emotions, how they are created, and how they impact every aspect of our lives - both within and beyond the professional sphere.
A successful entertainment professional, in the business of knowing what moves people, feels compelled to apologise for being moved herself.
How are we supposed to read this?
Are the judges supposed to be immune to the emotions they wish to purvey? How cynical would that be....
So where do you stand on this? Should a panellist who is there to gauge the artist's ability to evoke an emotional response feel obliged to suppress the very emotion they are trying to tap into?
It's an interesting reflection on our world, and if you're interested in human culture, or tapping into human potential in its entirety, maybe you'll have some additional thoughts on this matter, which I'd love to hear!
How do you feel when you listen to the song? Does it evoke an emotional response for you? Do you allow that response to happen? Or do you do a Simon and swallow it as best you can? If so, why?
These are questions we should definitely be asking ourselves.

I'm tired of having to call bullshit on "the race narrative," but I would never give up all the things I love about blackness: the music, the food, the traditions, the warmth I feel when I see excellence in my people.

WWBD (What would Beyonce do!) My new series looking at how Queen B would deal with common Presentation Skills issues!! 😉
#1 Q&A - Beyonce doesn't end her concerts with a Q&A!
They say audiences remember the first and last things they hear. So, who wants their big finish overshadowed by a confusing question, a question you can't answer, or worse still a negative question?
Not me and not Queen Bee!
So, here's my sneaky trick to keep the spotlight on my story: about 10 minutes before my grand finale, I throw out a tantalising promise: "I've got one last golden nugget for you, but before that, who's got some burning questions?"
This not only gives folks a chance to pick my brain, but it also plants the seed of anticipation for my big finish. Since I've adopted this strategy, it's been like watching a magic trick —audiences stick around till the very end, eager for my final punchline. And the cherry on the cake - my "closing number" ties everything together, sums it all up and ensures my message is sticky and the last thing they remember.
So, promise 'em a big finish, then tackle the Q&A .... thank them for the questions ... then you have your grand finale, the encore performance - your final big hit!
Trust me, they'll all be humming your last 'song' long after the show is over.
