Similar to the Scottish policy announced last summer, the London Fire Brigade have released a change in their policy to Automatic fire alarms in commercial buildings. Starting from October, the London Fire Brigade are reducing the amount of time and resources spent going to unwanted fire signals. In Law Enforcement, or any form of public safety, we often deal with different versions of the same routine things day in a day out. However, there are times when will be confronted with situations or incidents that we never could believe would happen or whose scope is so large it boggles the mind. When these do happen, you have to be ready to act. How do you prepare yourself to act in these trying times? That is through intense, challenging, and difficult training. While you can never simulate the exact major incident that might confront you, you can utilize the lessons and skills you learned in similar incident training events to guide your actions during the true life event. Similar to the the old saying, “The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in combat” I like to remind people, “The more challenged you are in training, the better you will preform in the field.” Following this adage, when I served as the Emergency Services Manager I would make sure my CIty’s Emergency Operations Center personnel were challenged with yearly EOC exercises. These exercises covered acts of terrorism, vehicular mass casualty events, major earthquakes, airplane crashes, large landslides, tsunamis, and other large scale weather or mass disruption events. The challenges they faced were often worst case, you only see in movies, type of disaster scenarios but it made them think outside the box, move out of their comfort zone, and function in roles that they never expected to function in. This training was extremely beneficial because when the City did experience a major landslide, the team jumped into action and had a plan to follow to guide them in successfully and safely managing the incident. Never wait for the overwhelming incident to occur and hope you and your team will handle it properly. For reference, the last time it was open cumulatively—not piecemeal—they still called all Fire Departments “Fire Brigades.” For those unfamiliar, notice-and-comment is the standard way Administrative Agencies informally enact rules and regulations. It offers a unique opportunity to effectuate change by allowing members of the public to submit input to a proposal.  Because it is open to the public for suggestions, Firefighters can voice their experience to help promulgate the changes they feel are most essential or absent from the rule or regulation. I worked in the Fire Service for a long time, I know you've all got opinions. You should thoughtfully submit them.

In the year 2020 for 48 countries of the World: The fire brigades served almost 70 million missions.
