Thanks to the UW College of Built Environments and UW Facilities' Salvage Wood Program, students are making use of lumber from felled campus trees and creating furniture. Prior to the launch of the program, campus trees marked for removal would have become merely wood chips. Now, the program is not only saving students money on costly materials, but providing some truly special lumber to CBE majors. #EarthDay https://lnkd.in/gVpkzuGB

New research from the UW explores how different types of nature interactions affect children's sense of presence. The study involved 127 Girl Scouts, ages 8–11, who described meaningful experiences in nature. Researchers categorized these experiences as either visual, such as watching a bird through a window, or embodied, such as building a snowman. Participants who had these more hands-on interactions reported a greater sense of presence in nature than those who reported only visual interactions. This research contributes to our understanding of how programs like the Girl Scouts can contribute to children's overall well-being. #EarthDay https://lnkd.in/gk4hfwPf

Between keeping time for the Husky Marching Band and tossing fish at Pike Place Market, Ryan Shapero, ’27, is as Seattle as it gets. And yes — that's a pic of him rubbing elbows with Chrissy Teigen! A second-year marine biology student, Ryan loves getting to apply some of that science to his weekend job at Pike Place. He particularly loves when kids come up with the oddest questions. “Multiple times I’ve just been, like, explaining crustacean morphology to a 7-year-old. And they’re into it!” https://lnkd.in/gSqGh9DV

A moment to remember! Ryan and Valentina’s journey together started under the cherry blossoms at the University of Washington, and they've made it a tradition to capture a photo each year beneath the blooms. This year, during peak bloom, Ryan took the opportunity to make their tradition even more special by popping the question in the very same spot where it all began—and Valentina said YES! Here's to a love story that continues to blossom. 💍🌸
